Nachtlied
Poet: Joseph Eichendorff
Set by: Felix Mendelssohn
Gone is the light of day
From the distance comes the sound of bells
So time moves through the night
Taking many an unknowing soul with it
Where now is all the bountiful joy,
The comforting breast of a true friend,
The sweet light in the eye of a beloved?
Will no one, no one be cheerful with me?
Start up then, beloved nightingale,
You waterfall of bright sound!
God praise we all together,
Until the light of morning shines!
